Your data and the vault: what we store and what we do not

What Buyancy reads from your banks, what it keeps, and what the vault protects and does not.

This page explains the vault in plain words. Our privacy policy is the full statement.

What Buyancy reads, and how

You connect a bank through Plaid or Wealthica. They hold your bank login. Buyancy never sees it, and it can only read: it cannot move your money.

When you ask a question, Buyancy reads your current balances and recent transactions from the banks, works out the answer, and does not store the transactions. It holds them in the server's memory for a short while (up to 15 minutes without use) so a second question does not have to ask the bank again, then drops them.

What Buyancy keeps

The things you tell it and the things it works out for you: your accounts' settings, your goals, your bills, your payday, your past questions and the answers. These are kept in your vault.

What the vault does

The vault seals what is kept. The key that opens it is made in your browser and stays with you, protected by your passphrase and a recovery key. Buyancy stores it only in a form it cannot open.

The claim we make, and can stand behind, is this: we don't store your financial data in a form we can read, so a leak of our database would expose nothing.

What the vault does not do

Being honest about limits matters more than a bold claim.

  • The server still reads your data while it works. To answer a question, your data is opened in memory for that request and then forgotten. The vault protects what is stored, not what is being used at that moment.
  • Background alerts are optional and off by default. To check your bills and goals overnight, Buyancy has to be able to open them without you present. If you turn this on, you are choosing that, and the window where you turn it on says so. Alerts never include amounts.
  • We cannot reset your passphrase or your recovery key. If you lose both, what you wrote in Buyancy cannot be opened again. Your banks are not affected: you would reconnect and start your entries again.

If you share Buyancy with a partner

While you are linked as a household, what the household view needs (accounts, bills, pay, and the goals you share) is wrapped so your partner can open it, and household answers can be read by both of you. If you leave the household, new entries are no longer wrapped for them. What they already opened cannot be taken back, and Buyancy tells you that before you confirm.

Deleting your account

Deleting your account removes your goals, bills, feedback and waitlist entry and disconnects your banks. Your past answers stay sealed and can no longer be opened by anyone.

This explains how Buyancy works. It is not financial advice, and it does not know your whole situation.
